Summary

Zainab。

Exciting, spectacular and blood-soaked read。 All that rage and blood was unprecedented。 Incredibly fast paced and pleasantly so, overwhelming at times for its heinous themes yet its unpredictable essence juxtaposed that for me。 The politics in The Poppy War and its parallels to our world is simply fascinating。 The human greed, vengeance- all real。 An overall thrilling and engaging read。 Can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel。

Epic! Loved every word in this trilogy!

。。more

Can we take a moment to appreciate that Rebecca Kuang is only 25 years old? She's 25 years old and has published a bestselling award-winning high fantasy TRILOGY? Not to mention that this series has been credited as changing the direction of fantasy from celebrating violence and war crimes to focusing on the traumatic impact that war and violence can have on marginalized communities。。。。and draws inspiration from actual Chinese military history。。。。。all while being an absolute page-turner。So, Rebe Can we take a moment to appreciate that Rebecca Kuang is only 25 years old? This was my first grim dark fantasy and I loved it。 The way R。F Kuang set up the story with the three parts was so captivating。 I was in a major reading slump before this and read this in two days。 I could not put it down。 I can't wait to get the next book! I really love how graphic this book was, but also that I found myself very interested in this foreign culture

This book is a little rough around the edges, but I did not really mind the messiness and thought that in many ways it added to the book's charm。 The Poppy War is super compelling, and while there is a lot of telling rather than showing, which is something I am generally pretty critical of in fantasy, for some reason it works here。 Kuang does a good job of mixing in moments that show, and I think the brisk, no-frills prose makes the 'telling' flow more naturally than it does in other books。 I am This book is a little rough around the edges, but I did not really mind the messiness and thought that in many ways it added to the book's charm。 The Poppy War is super compelling, and while there is a lot of telling rather than showing, which is something I am generally pretty critical of in fantasy, for some reason it works here。 Kuang does a good job of mixing in moments that show, and I think the brisk, no-frills prose makes the 'telling' flow more naturally than it does in other books。 I am generally in the "tropes in and of themselves are (predominantly) not bad, it's how you use them that matters" boat, but I do find that a lot of fantasy I've been reading lately feels formulaic and tropey in a reductive way, so The Poppy War felt like such a breath of fresh air。 Kuang takes a lot of tropes you typically see in fantasy and subverts or averts them。 Coupled with a protagonist who does bad things, but you understand why, but whom the narrative and the protagonist themselves does not try to excuse, and you've got a winning combination。 4。5/5 。。。more

If you are a human being, you need to read this book。 Period。 My heart goes out to all the Chinese people lost during the 1937–1938 Nanking Massacre。

I am emotionally drained。 This book pulled me in every direction from start to finish。 From the highs of epic triumphs and character development to the lows of brutal agony and grief。The world building and history was HEAVY (and I am dumb) but the minute it all came together it felt like my whole world changed! It clicked and I was hooked and I couldn’t stop。Bravo R。F。 Kuang。 You created a masterpiece with such raw emotions that could never be replicated。

Really well written, but man were some parts hard to read。

Wow! Did I actually finish this book? What I Liked: -It was well-written-I learned about Chinese history (All of the Poppy Wars)-Fleshed out characters-Lots of conflicts that flowed nicelyWhat I Didn't Like:-Rin was bloodthirsty (maybe an unreliable protagonist?) and cocky/had a lot of anger issues-Rin and Nikan make up quicker than I would think about all the years of bullying each other -One minute Rin says she likes Nikan (can't let him go to the enemy) and the next minute she loves Altan?-Wh Wow! He is barely in the story and we, as readers, don't learn anything about him other than he's a great fighter and he somehow recovers from a life-threatening injury-Two and a half years seem to go by yet it seemed slow-moving (to me)Will I read the next two books? Maybe but not anytime soon。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This is my first high fantasy novel i’ve read and I thoroughly enjoyed it。 At first I hated Altan’s character, but towards the end when it starts to go deeper into Altan’s back story and shows the hatred he feels for the Federation for what they did to him, I think he has every right。 I’m looking forward to reading the other two books and seeing how much Rin and the Cike grow。

Rating: 4 stars "You humans always think you’re destined for things, for tragedy or for greatness。 Destiny is a myth。 Destiny is the only myth。 The gods choose nothing。 You chose。" This book was so much more intense than I thought it would be。 Kuang really buried the lead with the whole 'grimdark' thing in the first two parts。 Yeah there was violence and some heavy themes but NOTHING compared to what's in part 3 (I'll do a list of content warnings at the bottom of this review)。 Thi Rating: 4 stars "You humans always think you’re destined for things, for tragedy or for greatness。 Destiny is a myth。 Destiny is the only myth。 The gods choose nothing。 You chose。" This book was so much more intense than I thought it would be。 Kuang really buried the lead with the whole 'grimdark' thing in the first two parts。 Yeah there was violence and some heavy themes but NOTHING compared to what's in part 3 (I'll do a list of content warnings at the bottom of this review)。 This is one of those rare books where I actually love the main character and they're one of the main draws of the book for me。 Rin is so lovable (and sometimes hateable), and the best part is when you're cheering for her so hard in the beginning but then she starts to make。。。 Choices。。。 and all you can do is sit there and watch。 It's truly captivating。 I think part 1 is an excellent introduction to the world and the characters in a controlled environment that most people are familiar with: a school。 Starting at part 2, though, all bets are off and no one is safe。 Kuang really didn't pull any of her punches with her descriptions and settings during the war, and it makes it that much harder when you realize that almost all of these characters wouldn't be considered legal adults in America today。 There were only a couple of things I didn't like。 I personally don't know how I like the choice the author made about Rin's heritage。 I think it kind of came out of left field and I don't really like how it affected her arc。 It didn't come up too often though, surprisingly, so it wasn't that bad。 I also think the whole thing with Nezha coming back in part 3 and then immediately disappearing again right was kind of rushed and strange。 I didn't really have time to get re-attached to him as a character before he was gone。 Overall, I loved this book and I will definitely be reading the next ones。 Okay here are some content warnings I can think of off the top of my head:- racism- self harm- torture- drug use/addiction- rape/sexual abuse (a recounted event, approximately 1 page, not a recurring theme)- gore, mutilation of corpses, infant death, basically all the war violence you can think of "They were monsters!" Rin shrieked。 "They were not human!""Have you ever considered," he said slowly, "that that was exactly what they thought of us?" 。。。more

I really liked how the author used historical Chinese elements in this fantasy fiction。 The first half felt more like Harry Potter novel and the second half more like Game of Thrones so I was a little thrown off by the shift but overall very interesting fantasy fiction and I am looking forward to getting my hands on the second book in this series。
